The United States Mint produced the 2020-W Jefferson Nickel (Buy on eBay) with Proof and Reverse Proof finishes as special premium coins included within annual numismatic sets. These coins represented the first time that the “W” mint mark had appeared on the nickel, denoting production at the West Point Mint facility. This premium offering was similar to the 2019-W Lincoln Cents offered in the prior year annual sets.
Proof Coin
For the present offering, the 2020 Proof Sets included the 2020-W Jefferson Nickel struck with a Proof finish, featuring frosted raised design elements against mirrored fields. The set went on sale February 27, 2020, priced at $32 per set. The last known sales for the set reached 464,039 units.
The 2020 Silver Proof Sets included the 2020-W Jefferson Nickel struck with a Reverse Proof finish. This type of finish features the opposite effect of the Proof, with mirrored raised design elements against frosted fields. This set went on sale April 17, priced at $63.25 per set. The last known sales for the set reached 313,185 units.
Each of the sets featured the ten standard Proof coins in two plastic lenses, with the special nickel packaged separately in clear United States Mint branded plastic wrap and inserted into an envelope.
The United States Mint had also intended to include a 2020-W Jefferson Nickel with an Uncirculated finish within the 2020 Uncirculated Mint Set. Unfortunately, the special offering was canceled due to the effects of COVID-19 at the Mint’s manufacturing facilities.
